We set up BeDazzling as a limited company in 2004.
While on a family trip to Bali in 2002 we saw beautiful items not available in New Zealand that we felt people would appreciate the chance to buy.
At the same time we were looking for an interactive hobby so, on our next trip, we brought several sorts of scarves and wraps and sold them at markets and fairs around the Wellington Region, at 'parties' and from our home in Upper Hutt.
We then expanded the range to include jewellery and bags. While working at the markets Jill would often wear the knit clothing she had bought in Bali. So many people would ask where they could get it, we decided to have some made and add that to our range - the BeDazzling clothing range had begun.
The clothing is made for us in Bali in our own styles, colours - and sizes to suit our NZ customers - and we developed our BeDazzling label to go inside them. We listened to customer feedback and changed our styles accordingly - something that we still do today. We do not have huge numbers of any one style or colour made and we can also have items made to order for our customers.
Our business was growing so we decided a shop was the next step - and Dannielle was available to take the manager's role as we were both still working full time in other jobs. Upper Hutt was the chosen site as this was were we were based. Upper Hutt also has one of the fastest growing populations in NZ. The shop was well received by customers - both existing and new - and as we are open 7 days customers come from around the region to see what is new. (Sorry, our Upper Hutt store closed in March 2008)
We select our own stock overseas and have recently added clothing, bags, wraps and giftware, that we purchase from Vietnam and Singapore, to our range.
2006 was a time for change so we decided to move to the sunny Hawkes Bay (where Allan was from). We were fortunate enough to find a large shop in Lower Emerson Street, Napier and mid-February opened our Napier BeDazzling shop with Jill now working full time in the business.
We have also added Art Deco clothes to our range. This includes vintage furs, Art Deco hats and headwear as well as other Art Deco outfits and accessories.
We also wholesale our clothing and some jewellery, wraps, bags and giftware to selected stores around the central North Island. This gives us more buying power - that means better prices that we pass onto you and gives other shops a chance to stock our BeDazzling label clothing.
We like to have fun in our shops and to interact with customers. We hold fund raising events and promotion evenings in the shops for schools, kindergartens, sports clubs, small businesses and individuals. These are well received - the fundraiser makes some money and we get to meet a lot of new customers.
